A group of researchers from China and England examined the relationship between egg consumption and cardiovascular diseases, ischemic heart disease, major coronary diseases, hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke.

Egg saves life

The study used data from the China Kadoorie Biobank study, which was conducted with approximately half a million adults aged 30-79 from 10 different geographical regions in China.

Between 2004 and 2008, selected participants were asked how often they consumed eggs, and these people were followed up to examine their morbidity and mortality rates.

For the new study, researchers focused on 416,213 participants who did not have cancer, cardiovascular disease or diabetes.

As a result of an average of 8-9 years of follow-up in this group, a total of 83 thousand 977 cases of cardiovascular disease and 9 thousand 985 deaths due to cardiovascular disease, as well as 5 thousand 103 coronary diseases, were recorded.

It was stated that at the beginning of the study period, 13.1 percent of the participants consumed at least one egg every day, and 9.1 percent never or very rarely consumed eggs.

The results revealed that compared to people who did not consume eggs, daily egg consumption was associated with an overall lower risk of cardiovascular disease.

Eggs reduce the risk of stroke by 26 percent

In particular, it was observed that those who consumed at least one egg a day had a 26 percent lower risk of hemorrhagic stroke, a 28 percent lower risk of death due to hemorrhagic stroke, and an 18 percent lower risk of cardiovascular disease.

On the other hand, it was stated that compared to the "never/rarely" egg consuming category, people who consume eggs daily have a 12 percent lower risk of ischemic heart disease, which occurs as a result of the heart muscle not being nourished for various reasons.

Eggs also contain high-quality protein, many vitamins, bioactive components such as phospholipids and carotenoids.

Most previous studies investigating the health effects of eating eggs found insignificant associations between egg consumption and coronary heart disease or stroke.
