Prostate Cancer Can Be Diagnosed Early with Urology Examination
On the occasion of "Prostate Cancer Awareness Month", Turkish Urooncology Association shared important information about prostate cancer. President of the Turkish Urooncology Association and Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine Department of Urology Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Cenk Yücel Bilen conveyed the latest developments in the field of early diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer at the ASCO-GU 23 Update Meeting held on 15-16 September. He also emphasized the work of the Prostate Diseases Working Group within the Turkish Urooncology Association in Turkey on determining the data of our country.
Prostate Cancer Week
According to the results of the "Turkey Prostate Cancer Map" report prepared by the Turkish Urooncology Association, prostate cancer appears as an important health problem in Turkey. Prof. Dr. Sinan Sözen stated that the report aims to shed light on early diagnosis and treatment processes, and pointed out that the diagnosis of prostate cancer is usually asymptomatic. Turkish Urooncology Association Board Member Prof. Dr. Güven Aslan stated that half of the patients presented with symptoms such as frequent urination, difficulty urinating and blood in the urine, while the other half came for prostate control without showing any symptoms.
MR-Fusion Imaging
Pointing out that the COVID-19 pandemic delays early diagnosis and treatment, Secretary General of the Turkish Urooncology Association, Prof. Dr. İlker Tinay emphasized that Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging technology plays an important role in the diagnosis of prostate cancer and that the use of MR-Fusion prostate biopsy is increasing. He also pointed out that as the stage of prostate cancer progresses, the treatment of the disease becomes more complex and requires a multidisciplinary approach. Turkish Urooncology Association President Prof. Dr. Cenk Yücel Bilen stated that the majority of patients diagnosed with prostate cancer in Turkey are treated with surgical methods and that closed methods such as laparoscopic and robotic surgery have become popular in recent years. He also stated that alternative treatment methods such as radiation therapy are used effectively. Turkish Urooncology Association Prostate Diseases Working Group Chairman Assoc. Dr. Serdar Çelik emphasized that the studies carried out by his groups continue in a wide range from prostate cancer diagnosis to treatment, and dozens of international publications have been published from these studies in recent years.
